CHAPTER TWENTY

We retired to our rooms. I had Rosie boot up the computer. I wanted to take another look at the documents we’d recorded.

“No more broken windows,” I told Nanna. “We’re supposed to be sneaky.”

“Well, it moved the case forward.”

“They already thought we were onto them. Despite your graffiti idea—which was a pretty good one, I admit—now, they can be certain. They have eyes on the development office. The guy driving the car was Chief Watson. I’m almost positive.”

“The chief is patrolling at night?” Rosie said.

“Off the books, I’ll bet,” I said. “He’s protecting them all. Whoever all of them are. We have good guesses. So did Mary-Ann. My seeing Watson at the office counts, as far as our investigation goes, but not as far as hard evidence.”

With the machine booted up, Rosie transferred the photos. Even though she had taken photos of the story printout at the bottom of the drawer, she could zoom in enough that the words were legible. Nanna suddenly burst out laughing.

“What’s up, Nanna?” Rosie smiled.

Nanna, still snickering, pointed at the scrap of paper in the corner. “That’s so embarrassing!”

Rosie moused the scrap larger. It was a receipt from a drugstore. I saw what Nanna was so cracked up by.

“Wart medicine!” she said, “Antifungal cream, and Rogaine for women!”

“That is embarrassing,” Rosie agreed.

“Serves her right for being evil!”

It was a little amusing. “I want to see the list again.”

The handwritten note page came up. A short list of names. “You want me to background these guys?”

I nodded. “Might learn something about them that leads us somewhere. The sheriff and the mayor are kind of expected. We should still check on them. But Burnham we don’t know. And David is so aggressive, it wouldn’t surprise me if he had a rap sheet.”

“What’s that?” Rosie zoomed to the bottom of the page. “GRR? Initials?”

I thought for a moment. “Not that I recognize.”

“I’ll add it to my list of things to look up online,” Rosie said. “Might be a company name. MLG. UTU. Sounds like a trend.”

“Let’s see the blueprints,” I said.

Rosie brought them up. She arranged two photos, one from the flat file, one we found on the desk, in a way that she could toggle between them.

We looked at one. Then the other. And back again.

“Are they different?” Nanna asked.

“No, they’re kind of the same,” Rosie said. “The structure is the same. It’s just the information that’s different. One shows the elevation of wherever they’re building the thing. That was the one from the drawer. The other shows the layout of the interior in more detail. Two drawings of the same site. I don’t know much about architecture, but it seems you’d need more than one drawing.”

“When you were at town hall, were these plans on view?”

Nanna shrugged. “They had a plan posted, yeah, but I couldn’t tell you which one. We’re supposed to get renditions of what the nightclub will look like. Hope it’s ugly.”

Staring wasn’t doing us much good. I looked at the squiggly lines on the one, the elevations Rosie called them.
